"Our School E.T." (ET means English Teacher) It talks about how one gym teacher changes his career path and choose to teach English and at the same time just like the Japanese counterpart GTO he changes the lives of 5 young people and made an impact from the way they live their lives to even their career paths. What blows me was the fact that he believes in a system whereby school is a place for learning and not just a prep college step board. It's not about GPA, not about individual grades neither is it about grades collectively for the school. Looking back to the discussions I've been hearing within our island, I notice the stark similarities between what was portrayed by the students (the mentality and mindset); What they had in the movie was that school is just another resting place and real learning comes from tutoring or private lessons, and they are at school because it's a formality and needed to go through the social rites of path to attain the much sought after prestigious institution of learning. Teachers likewise strive to ensure the student study and attain good grades without looking at developing the inner man. Though one may simply say that it's just another movie and things normally are magnified to dramatize the story but how far are we from this actually? Are we studying for the sake of getting the GPA score we want and then study in a better place so there's a dream job waiting for you? If yes, then after that what? Get a wife, have kids and die? If so, then I would suggest we fast forward it without the pain of raising children and the pain or sickness we have to go through when we grow old. Guess we do not live in this place for no reason. |
